Imagine you’re at internship/ work and a young person comes up to you and says, “I’ve been hearing about Black Lives Matter, but I’m not really sure what it is. Can you explain it to me?” Explain the movement using words that a young person would understand. What questions do YOU have about BLM? Post at least two

The black lives matter moment is a a chapter-based, member-led organization whose mission is to build local power and to intervene in violence inflicted on Black communities by the state and vigilantes.

This is an explanation posted on the black lives matter movement's website, and is my best way of explaining the movement itself. Basically, the movement is based on the recent publicity of the large incarceration of black men in America, and the notion that all lives matter no matter what race you are.

My question as an outsider, and a white female, is what can we as a society do to help further push this movement into being more publicized and successful? I feel since I am in fact a white female, that I don't have much of a say in this movement and don't have much to participate. I also feel that I don't have a right to critique or comment on it, because I can't begin to imagine the persecution that black people, black men in particular, have felt throughout their lives.

Also, after watching these videos about the black lives matter movement, I read some of the comments below (which were good and bad) and was curious as to what specifically caused people to create this movement... in other words, what event made people snap and think wow, we need to talk about this and spread our ideas with the world.

  1. Hi Bailey.
I agree with your first question and I know where your thoughts are coming from. I am always careful when speaking about any movement (especially BLM), and it's probably because I don't want to look misinformed or look as if I'm "joining the bandwagon."

    P.S. use bigger font! ;p

  2. Yes, Bailey. I think the question of what BLM means for white folks and other non-Black POCs is really important! I hope we can take this up today.

  3. Hi Bailey, as already stated the font does make it harder to read but overall great job explaining BLM.
