after reading : https://drive.google.com/file/d/18cGx8K7u_h6ELMa0QcBXrejHHsBrlEf6/view The central argument of this reading seems to be that people who work in the social justice system in the United States have limited funding and resources for their nonprofits. Basically the people who work in the social justice system have to fight for government funding for their programs and it is completely unfair. In the process of fighting for government funding for their programs, this takes time away from fulfilling their nonprofit's mission and defeats the whole purpose of "nonprofits".The issue is that these nonprofit organization have been more concerned with staying in business, that they forget why they created this nonprofit in the first place (social justice) The main critiques of the nonprofit sector is that they spend too much time trying to raise money and ask the government to fund their programs. The funding system is not set up for the nonprofit sector to succee...

Blog post #8: direct mail

There are many similarities and differences between these letters. For example, some of the letters have similar pictures, except for "United We Dream." Another similarity is that they are all written in bold and italicized font, and have a personal intro. However, YIA and Downcity didn't have personal introductions, and YIA contained a lot of writing in the main part of the email as compared to the other organizations. Also, Downcity is the only group who named and thanked the 2017 funders. Lastly, all of the organizations except for YIA had facts which included numbers and stats. The organizations used many tools such as bold/italicized words and sentences to show the severity and need of their cause. They all have photos of people who have been impacted by the different organizations, the International Rescue Committee in particular. In my opinion, Downcity seemed to be very lenient when it came to asking for money as compared to United We Dream, which had ...

-In my own words, HSLI brings communities together by giving educators and community leaders the tools they need to create a fulfilling summer learning program for youth. -The problems that they address are that students lose about two months of of grade level equivalency while on summer vacation, and low income students lose about two months of loss in reading achievement during this time. -Low income families with middle-school and high school aged students in RI are eligible for this program. -The qualities that an organization needs to have in order to apply are professional development, sustainability, and success. -The partnerships they support are summer programs in RI -The main components that are required for the grant proposal are data and outcomes, collaboration, curriculum structure, professional development, sustainability, demonstrate success, and documentation. -My take on the HSLI is that it is a good proposal and would truly benefit RI as a whole. The onl...

philanthropic foundation

For this blog, I chose to research the RI Foundation. Their mission is   a proactive community and philanthropic leader dedicated to meeting the needs of the people of Rhode Island.  Founded in 1916, the Rhode Island Foundation is one of the nation's oldest and largest community foundations. They are Rhode Island's only community foundation and the largest funder of Rhode Island's nonprofit sector.  The Foundation was organized at the Rhode Island Hospital Trust Co.  in June 1916 by a small group of prominent citizens. It was modeled after the first community foundation established in Cleveland two years earlier. "There is a growing belief that the charitable problems of each generation can better be, and should be, solved by the best minds of each generation," the founders wrote. Jesse H. Metcalf, an industrialist and United States Senator, gave the Foundation its first gift of $10,000. Metcalf was a dominant influence in the development of American ...

Blog post #5:  Do a deep dive into the PASA TEAM page. Toggle back and forth between the Team “bios” and the program descriptions to better understand what each staff member does. Choose one position that you might be interested in pursuing (now or later in your career). What is exciting about this position to you? What seems challenging? Looking at the bio (and googling the staff member) what prior training, education, or experiences prepared them for this role? Brainstorm ONE QUESTION for Brittany about PASA. I like the position of Human Resources Coordinator. At PASA, there is a team member named  Eric who oversees and coordinates human resources for PASA. Prior to PASA, Eric worked as a substitute teacher for K-8th grade at the Gordon School in East Providence. Eric holds an ME in Curriculum Studies from University of Massachusetts, Amherst. -I like the fact that in this position requires attention to the human resources department itself. -However, the id...

Play Box (Ashley and Bailey)

Hey ya'll! Hope you enjoyed our play-box facilitation tonight. We wanted to find a way to incorporate mindfulness and meditation in a way that was easy to understand and fun to do. We thought with such short time it would be easier to perform an activity for mindfulness rather than meditation, because the meditation exercise we had in mind would've taken more time and required more physical activity. Overall, I feel like we did a good job of explaining the differences and similarities between mindfulness and meditation. However, I feel we could have done a better job of going in depth about meditation and what kind of activities could be performed. Something we could change in the future would be to explain the activities more slowly and thoroughly. With such short time, we tried to go through them as quickly as possible, which didn't leave much time to throughly perform the activity.

New Urban Art's constituents consist of students, mentors, and a full time staff that serves high school students and emerging artists in Providence, RI. They serve urban high school students, trained artist mentors, and emerging artists. ' Their long-term goal is that young people and artists mentors work together—as collaborators and peers—to develop creative practices which allow them to become more imaginative, and active, community members.  One zip code I chose to look up the demographic for was my own town, Tiverton, RI (02878), in which 43.7% of the working population is employed in executive, management, and professional occupations. The second most important occupational group in this neighborhood is sales and service jobs, from major sales accounts, to working in fast food restaurants, with 22.8% of the residents employed. Other residents here are employed in manufacturing and laborer occupations (18.7%), and 14.8% in clerical, assistant, and tech support occupati...
