Using the theory of change worksheet, consider your internship organization’s approach to making social change. What problem are they trying to solve? How do programs support the mission? What is your organization’s theory of change?


The problem that my internship site (YMCA) is trying to change is improve their summer camp programs so that the youth can have a fulfilling experience. 
Some other problems that the Newport County community is facing is fitness and obesity. The YMCA is trying to take a leadership role in health and wellness.

Their mission is improve and positively influence the quality of life and social well being for our members, our families, and our community. There is a huge emphasis placed on the whole person through programs and activities that help develop spiritual, mental and physical well-being.

 My organization's theory of change is to position themselves as a cause-driven organization and communicate the Y's cause to serve the communities in which they serve. They plan to reach and maintain financial sustainability while addressing the issues of their aging facility.

Overall, the YMCA of Newport County wants to maximize opportunities to communicate the Y's cause by identifying and utilizing multiple messaging platforms.

 They also want to create a year-round, volunteer-driven, culture of philanthropy through adopting YMCA best practices.

    Hi Bailey! i believe this Change is SPOT on. The Y has multiple levels and many needs for change depending on the program. I love the one you focuses on and I can defiantly see that as a reflection in their work. Thanks for your blog post as it helps me to understand the topic in another set of eyes.

    Thanks for your post Bailey. You have identified several key challenges (community obesity, developing fulfilling out of school programing). How does the Y attempt to address these problems through programming? (One example might be offering low cost gym memberships). What steps are needed to bring about change? And how will you know that you have been successful in this work (impact)?

Blog post #8: direct mail

There are many similarities and differences between these letters. For example, some of the letters have similar pictures, except for "United We Dream." Another similarity is that they are all written in bold and italicized font, and have a personal intro. However, YIA and Downcity didn't have personal introductions, and YIA contained a lot of writing in the main part of the email as compared to the other organizations. Also, Downcity is the only group who named and thanked the 2017 funders. Lastly, all of the organizations except for YIA had facts which included numbers and stats. The organizations used many tools such as bold/italicized words and sentences to show the severity and need of their cause. They all have photos of people who have been impacted by the different organizations, the International Rescue Committee in particular. Basically the people who work in the social justice system have to fight for government funding for their programs and it is completely unfair. In the process of fighting for government funding for their programs, this takes time away from fulfilling their nonprofit's mission and defeats the whole purpose of "nonprofits".The issue is that these nonprofit organization have been more concerned with staying in business, that they forget why they created this nonprofit in the first place (social justice) The main critiques of the nonprofit sector is that they spend too much time trying to raise money and ask the government to fund their programs.
