philanthropic foundation


For this blog, I chose to research the RI Foundation. Their mission is a proactive community and philanthropic leader dedicated to meeting the needs of the people of Rhode Island. 

Founded in 1916, the Rhode Island Foundation is one of the nation's oldest and largest community foundations. They are Rhode Island's only community foundation and the largest funder of Rhode Island's nonprofit sector. The Foundation was organized at the Rhode Island Hospital Trust Co. 
in June 1916 by a small group of prominent citizens. It was modeled after the first community foundation established in Cleveland two years earlier. "There is a growing belief that the charitable problems of each generation can better be, and should be, solved by the best minds of each generation," the founders wrote.

Jesse H. Metcalf, an industrialist and United States Senator, gave the Foundation its first gift of $10,000. Metcalf was a dominant influence in the development of American textiles and a well-known philanthropist and statesman.

In 2016, the Foundation celebrated its centennial by honoring the people, places, and traditions that make Rhode Island special.

At year’s end, they looked back on many of the year’s signature events, community-building activities, and investments in Rhode Island, including the campaign to restore and preserve Roger Williams Park.

In 2017, the Foundation awarded 43 million dollars in grants to more than 1,700 nonprofit organizations, and we continued our commitment to address the state's most pressing issues and needs of diverse communities.

There are many similarities and differences between these letters. For example, some of the letters have similar pictures, except for "United We Dream." Another similarity is that they are all written in bold and italicized font, and have a personal intro. However, YIA and Downcity didn't have personal introductions, and YIA contained a lot of writing in the main part of the email as compared to the other organizations. Also, Downcity is the only group who named and thanked the 2017 funders. Lastly, all of the organizations except for YIA had facts which included numbers and stats. Basically the people who work in the social justice system have to fight for government funding for their programs and it is completely unfair. In the process of fighting for government funding for their programs, this takes time away from fulfilling their nonprofit's mission and defeats the whole purpose of "nonprofits".The issue is that these nonprofit organization have been more concerned with staying in business, that they forget why they created this nonprofit in the first place (social justice) The main critiques of the nonprofit sector is that they spend too much time trying to raise money and ask the government to fund their programs.
